National Fire Prevention Week
The theme this year for Fire Prevention Week is “Charge into Fire Safety, Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” It will be held October 5-11, 2025.
For over 100 years, the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) – the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week has sponsored Fire Prevention Week.

This year’s focus is on lithium-ion batteries. The NFPA’s goal is to better educate the public about how to buy, charge, and dispose of them safely. There are many rooms in your home that have some sort of electronics that includes a Lithium-Ion battery. So what do we know about these batteries and should we be more aware of their safekeeping?
There are three important takeaways that the NFPA wants you to be educated on. Let us discuss each one.
Buy only batteries that are listed
- Do your research. Not all products are equal. When products require a lithium-ion battery, look for a stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab. If it is recognized the stamp will be on the packaging and product. This means that they meet safety standards, have been tested, and have established safety standards.
- When buying online some products may not meet safety standards and could increase the risk of fire.
Know how to Charge your device safely
- Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions when charging your devices. Most devices come with charging cables, be sure to use these for the safest charge.
- When needing a replacement charger, buy it from the manufacturer or one that has been listed as being approved by the manufacturer.
- When charging, always lay your device on a hard surface. Avoid charging it on your bed, under blankets, or on a soft cloth surface. This could cause a fire.
- When your device has reached 100%, take it off the charger.
Recycle or Dispose of batteries responsibly
- Lithium-ion batteries may catch fire if thrown in the regular recycling bins or trash.
- Look towards your local town for information on recycling devices or batteries. If they don’t offer it they may have information as to safe battery recycling in your area. You may also visit www.call2recycle.org to find a recycling spot near you.
