Chimney Caps, Crowns, & Chase Covers

You hear a lot about chimney caps, chimney crowns, and chimney chase covers. So what are they and what is the difference? Each component carries a big responsibility towards the functioning of your fireplace and chimney. They all function together, without one, you may not get the best protection for your chimney. Knowing the functions of each of these components will help to make good decisions when there is an issue with one of them. Chimney Cap

The chimney cap is the protective covering that fits over the top of the chimney. Its responsibility is to keep out debris, animals, and water.  The chimney cap sits on top of the chimney, right above the crown. If water gets into your chimney, you may see cracks in the cap. Chimney Crown

The crown is a large cement slab that covers the top of the chimney. The Crown may sit even with the chimney or at times may extend past the chimney itself. Chimney Chase Cover

A chimney chase cover is made of metal. It is created for a prefabricated chimney. They are not usually found on masonry chimneys. They are made to cover the entire top of the chimney. Here are some of the responsibilities and benefits of a chimney chase cover.
