Many homeowners do not realize that their fireplace isn’t really a traditional fireplace at all. Many fireplaces in our area are actually Factory Built Appliances. These fireplaces are actually made entirely of metal with cement panels on the interior that are made to resemble bricks.
Wood Framed Prefab Fireplaces
Factory built fireplace systems are designed and intended to be installed into a wood framed chimney. Because they are cost effective and more versatile then a traditional fireplace, an entire industry developed to supply the demand for them. There have been many manufacturers of factory built fireplaces over the years, many of which are no longer in business. Factory built fireplace and chimney systems are all different, meaning each manufacturer has their own production style. However, all of these systems must be tested and proven safe to be in a residence. All of these fireplace and chimney systems undergo rigorous testing to U.L.127 standards. These systems are tested and approved to be installed as a system only in the ways listed by the manufacturer. This means that chimney pipe from one manufacturer cannot be installed with a fireplace from another manufacturer.
This type of chimney pipe has changed very little over the years. Factory built flue pipe is either a triple or double wall air cooled pipe that comes in different length sections from 1 to 4 feet. It has a special stainless steel inner pipe that is meant to carry the byproducts of combustion safely out of the home. These sections of pipe “snap-lock” together. These fireplace systems are incredibly versatile because they can go almost anywhere and be finished on the exterior with just about anything. However, like anything else, if not installed and maintained properly, there can be huge problems.
Half of the hazards that commonly occur with these fireplaces are originated from the installation and lie hidden until a trained professional finds them or a structural fire occurs. The other half is usually due to existing damage caused by lack of maintenance. Sudden occurrence chimney fires from lack of cleanings can cause damage to the flue pipe that is irreversible. Water intrusion can also cause damage to important framing or even rust holes in the fireplace itself. Whatever the reason, many times the original fireplace manufacturer is no longer in business and these very important parts are no longer available. If parts are not available, typically the whole system has to be replaced. Luckily, you are in good hands.
