Chattanooga TN Chimney Masonry Repair
Chimney Solutions of Chattanooga provides chimney masonry repair services in the Greater Chattanooga area along with Northwest Georgia from Rome GA to Rossville GA. Other communities in our service area include Walden TN, Soddy-Daisy TN, Calhoun GA, and LaFayette GA.
Chimneys throughout Chattanooga contain many pieces and parts, including the masonry structure itself. This is an area where problems are usually easy to spot, whether it be brick damage, crumbling mortar or a chimney that leans. How you deal with these problems makes all the difference.
Early Signs of Chimney Masonry Damage
Be on the lookout for these signs of masonry damage. If you spot any of them, call us so we can get the problem resolved quickly.
Loose or cracked bricks
Perform a periodic inspection of your chimney’s masonry, looking for bricks that are loose, cracked or otherwise in bad shape. If you don’t feel comfortable getting up on the roof, we have trained chimney inspectors in Chattanooga who will do the job for you.
Crumbling mortar joints
The mortar that holds your chimney’s bricks together must be strong and solid. After years of harsh weather, mortar can begin to deteriorate. Use a finger to test the mortar, and watch for areas of crumbling on the masonry and the roof.
White stains
The white staining you may see on your chimney’s masonry is called “efflorescence.” The stains appear when moisture penetrates porous bricks and leaches out the naturally occurring salts within them. Moisture in bricks is no good and needs to be checked out.
Chimney leaks in your Chattanooga chimney
We consider water penetrating bricks to be a chimney leak. A leak also can mean water seeping past cracked bricks or compromised mortar joints. In this latter case, the result could be widespread water damage within the chimney system, including the chimney liner and interior masonry.
Leaning chimney
A properly built chimney will stand up straight and tall. When there are issues with the masonry, a chimney may begin to lean to one side. We encourage all our Chattanooga customers to keep an eye on the structural straightness of their chimneys and call us if anything looks off-kilter.
Carbon Monoxide Monitors Going Off
If your CO monitors are going off near your fireplace, it means toxic gases are somehow spilling into your home. Your chimney’s masonry or the masonry of the fireplace may be the cause. There are other possible causes, and we’ll check those out too.
How We Address Masonry Damage
The expert masons at Chimney Solutions are here to help with all your masonry issues, no matter where you live in the greater Chattanooga area. Each job is unique, but here are some of the strategies we use to restore chimneys to their proper condition.
- Tuckpointing: In this process, we remove deteriorated mortar and replace it with a strong new compound.
- Brick Replacement: We can replace just a couple of bricks or many bricks within the masonry structure.
- Chimney Waterproofing: Your Chattanooga chimney will last longer and require fewer masonry repairs if we apply a coat of industrial-grade waterproofing to its surfaces.
- Chimney Rebuilding: In extreme cases, we can rebuild parts or all of your chimney to make it once again safe and efficient.
